John Locke (1632-1704) was one of the first thinkers to look at what happened in our minds when we experience something. His contribution is that we have the capacity to decide to change our habits and routines and to consciously change our beliefs. This isn’t so much a revolutionary concept, but it does require us to think about the big picture.

As a child we have been taught that if you’re not careful you’ll be able to learn too much without going through the learning process. We’re now able to actually improve ourselves and others’ lives by focusing on what we do best. We’re not limited by our ability to learn so much. We can learn more about ourselves (and about others) by focusing on the things we do best.

I’ve always thought of the concept of self-awareness as being a very positive thing. I mean, if you think about it, it seems like a really wonderful thing to be able to consciously change your beliefs, your beliefs about yourself, and your beliefs about the world.

This is true, but it’s not exactly the most positive thing to think of. A lot of the time, we have to rely on our own internalized beliefs to make those changes. Think about it. If you’re in a relationship with a person, you’re going to have to rely, in some cases, on that person believing that they’re right for you. It might not be the most attractive thing in the world, but it works.

I am the type of person who will organize my entire home (including closets) based on what I need for vacation. Making sure that all vital supplies are in one place, even if it means putting them into a carry-on and checking out early from work so as not to miss any flights!
